University of Regina fourth-year guard
Brandon Tull scored his 1000th career point on Friday night, but the Cougars lost a 95-91 road decision to Brandon in a Canada West game at the Healthy Living Centre on the BU campus.
Tull came into the game with 993 points and scored his 1000th in the second quarter after hitting a pair of free throws. He becomes the 17th player in U of R history to hit the career milestone with a full season of U SPORTS eligibility still remaining.
Neither team held a double-digit advantage at any point during the game, with Regina's largest lead coming at the end of the first quarter when
Alex Igual's three-pointer gave the Cougars a 27-20 lead. But Brandon erased that lead in a hurry, scoring the first 10 points of the second quarter as Regina went scoreless until another Igual triple more than four minutes in.
The two teams went into the halftime break with the Cougars up 42-40, but a 12-1 run by Brandon in the third quarter eventually led to a nine-point lead for the Bobcats late in the period, their largest of the game. And Regina came right back in the fourth with a 12-2 run of its own to tie it up, and neither team led by more than four the rest of the way. The Cougars took their first lead of the fourth with an Igual layup with three minutes to go and went up by three on a layup by Tull on the next possession, but that turned out to be Regina's last field goal of the game. Brandon broke a 91-91 tie in the final minute on an Earl Thompson, Jr. bucket and after a defensive stop, made it a two-possession game on a layup by Chris Stanhope. The Cougars had three attempts from beyond the arc in the final seconds of the game, but weren't able to connect on any of them as Brandon held on for the win.
Tyvon Cooper was everywhere for Brandon after leading all players with 30 points, tying Thompson for the game high with 10 rebounds, and also collecting six assists and four steals. Stanhope was 5-for-6 from three-point range and finished with 26 points, while Thompson scored 16 points and John Paul had 14.
All five Regina starters hit double figures in points, led by
Alex Igual flirting with a triple-double after finishing with a team-high 19 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists. Tull scored 16,
Brian Ofori had 15, and
Samuel Hillis and
Travis Sylvestre both finished with 10.
Both teams now have six Canada West wins, though the Cougars (6-7) have two games in hand on Brandon (6-9) as the two squads battle for playoff position in the conference standings. They'll meet again on Saturday night (7:00) in Brandon.
