Kyanna Giles poured in a career-high 25 points for the University of Regina's women's basketball team as the Cougars completed a weekend sweep with a 75-55 win over Brandon on Saturday night at the Healthy Living Centre in Brandon, Man.
Giles was 4-for-6 from three-point range and also finished with seven rebounds, four steals, and three assists to help the No. 3-ranked Cougars improve their Canada West record to 12-2 on the season.
After the Cougars rolled to a 77-40 win on Friday night, Saturday's was a tighter contest as Brandon took a 17-15 lead after the opening quarter. The Cougars outscored Brandon 19-10 in the second to take a 32-25 lead into halftime, and it was a one-possession game for much of the third before the Cougars went on an 11-2 run to give them their first double-digit lead of the game.
Brandon's 10-2 run in a span of two minutes in the fourth quarter brought the hometown Bobcats to within eight points midway through the period, but that was as close as they'd come. The Regina defence held Brandon to just two buckets the rest of the way and the Cougars pulled away down the stretch to secure a comfortable 20-point victory.
Besides the 25-point effort by Giles, the Cougars also got 14 points from
Katie Polischuk and nine points apiece from
Sara Hubenig and
Christina McCusker. McCusker also had a team-leading eight rebounds for the U of R.
Keisha Cox had a double-double for Brandon with 18 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
The Cougars will return home to the CKHS next weekend for games on Friday and Saturday against Calgary (8-6).
