Emma Waldenberger netted the shootout winner as the University of Regina women's hockey team snapped a four-game skid with a 3-2 win over Mount Royal University on Saturday afternoon.
Lilla Carpenter-Boesch and
Kylie Gavelin scored in regulation for the Cougars, who improve to 9-10-3-0 with the win. Gabrielle Seper and Reanna Arnold replied for Mount Royal.
Mount Royal got off to a quick start, scoring just over five minutes into Saturday afternoon's contest. Seper created a turnover in the neutral zone and fired a wrist shot over the shoulder of
Morgan Baker for the lone goal of the first period.
The second period saw more action as Carpenter-Boesch replied for Regina with her fourth of the season. Waldenberger assisted on the goal that saw the rookie forward make a nice move around Emma Pincott and slip the puck home.
Arnold put MRU back on top just three minutes later on a delayed penalty. A shot from the point was knocked down in front but Arnold picked it up and put it in past Baker.
The Cougars evened the game back up again just before the end of the middle frame as Gavelin and
Jaycee Magwood went in on a two-on-one break. Magwood flipped a saucer pass across to Gavelin who buried a one-timer for her seventh of the campaign.
After no scoring in the third period the two teams went to overtime. After a five-minute four-on-four session, the second overtime provided a more eventful three-on-three setting. Pincott made a great save on a sprawling glove stop with just over a minute left and Baker stopped Seper on a breakaway with under 10 seconds to play.
After Arnold missed to open the shootout, Waldenberger beat Pincott with a quick wrist shot. Seper missed the net high and Carpenter-Boesch fanned on her shot, so Rachel Piitz had to score to extend it. Piitz put a high shot to the blocker side but Baker was up to the challenge to give the Cougars the win.
Baker stopped 25 shots on the night, Pincott stopped 29 Cougar efforts.
The Cougars will play a home-and-home series with the Saskatchewan Huskies next weekend. Friday's game will take place at The Co-operators Centre in Regina before Saturday's rematch in Saskatoon.
