The University of Regina men's hockey team will square off against the No. 2-ranked Saskatchewan Huskies this weekend, with each team playing one game on home ice.
The Cougars (3-17-2) dropped two hard-fought battles at home against No. 7 Mount Royal on the weekend, falling short of a comeback in a 4-3 loss on Friday and losing 4-3 in overtime on Saturday afternoon.
Ian McNulty had two goals on Friday and another on Saturday while
Cody Fowlie totaled three assists in the weekend set.
Fowlie leads the team with 15 points, including 11 assists. McNulty has a team-high eight goals and a total of 14 points, while
Tristan Frei (6G, 7A) and
Tyler Bell (3G, 7A) also have double-figure points for the Cougars.
Andy Desautels started Friday's game against Mount Royal, making 17 saves in his 15th appearance of the season.
Mitch Kilgore got the call on Saturday and stopped 32 MRU shots.
Saskatchewan is one of two Canada West teams that have clinched a playoff berth, as the Huskies lead the conference with a 16-4-2 record. The Huskies had a seven-game winning streak snapped against UBC last weekend, falling 4-2 to the hometown Thunderbirds on Saturday after taking a 2-1 win the previous night.
Jesse Forsberg is tied for second in the conference in points, as the third-year defenceman has 11 goals and 13 assists in 22 games. Michael Sofillas and Josh Roach are tied for fifth in Canada West with 21 points apiece while Logan McVeigh has 20 of his own.
Jordon Cooke has 15 wins and a conference-best four shutouts for Saskatchewan. The Huskies have allowed a conference-low 45 goals, largely because of Cooke's 1.83 goals-against average and .933 save percentage, both of which rank third among Canada West goaltenders.
The Cougars and Huskies met for a home-and-home back in October, a weekend which saw the Huskies skate to a 4-1 win in Regina and a 4-3 victory in Saskatoon.
