Lilla Carpenter-Boesch scored in the first period and
Jane Kish posted a shutout as the University of Regina women's hockey team defeated the Saskatchewan Huskies 1-0 in Saskatoon on Saturday night.
The Cougars (10-10-3-1) move back within a point of fourth-place Saskatchewan and a home playoff weekend with the win.
The game's lone goal came at the 18:37 mark of the opening frame as the Cougars were on a five-on-three powerplay. Carpenter-Boesch was planted right in front of the Huskie net and was able to slip a rebound under the pad of Cassidy Hendricks for her fifth of the Canada West campaign.
Emma Waldenberger and
Merissa Zerr assisted on the goal.
Kish was the story from there, making 15 of her 29 saves in the second period and collecting her third shutout of the season as the Cougars salvaged the weekend sweep. Hendricks made 20 saves as the Huskies drop to 9-8-4-3. The Cougar penalty kill went unblemished on seven Huskie powerplays.
The Cougars are at home for the final time in the regular season schedule next weekend, playing host to the No. 1-ranked UBC Thunderbirds. UBC (17-3-3-1) swept the Cougars in Vancouver in November, taking 4-1 and 3-2 wins.
