The University of Regina men's hockey team is back in action this weekend with a two-game road series against the UBC Thunderbirds.
The Cougars (3-19-2) swept UBC back in November on home ice, taking 6-1 and 4-3 wins over the visiting Thunderbirds.
Tristan Frei tallied three goals and three assists that weekend while
Andy Desautels was the winning goaltender on both nights.
More recently, the Cougars were swept by the Saskatchewan Huskies in a home-and-home series. The Cougars dropped Friday's contest in Saskatoon and fell again by a 5-2 margin on Saturday night. Defenceman
Tyler King had an assist on Friday and notched a goal and a helper on Saturday evening.
Captain
Cody Fowlie leads the team in points entering the weekend, with four goals and 11 assists to his credit.
Ian McNulty (8G, 6A), Frei (7G, 7A) and
Tyler Bell (3G, 7A) are behind him on the Cougar scoring list.
Andy Desautels leads Cougar goaltenders with 16 appearances between the pipes, while
Dawson MacAuley has eight and fifth-year
Mitch Kilgore has seven. All three netminders saw action last weekend in the pair of games against Saskatchewan.
UBC occupies seventh place in Canada West, a spot above the Cougars and just four points back of Lethbridge for the final playoff spot. The T-Birds were swept by Lethbridge last weekend, losing 5-2 on Friday before a devastating 8-7 defeat in overtime on Saturday.
Anthony Bardaro leads the way offensively for UBC, as his 26 points are good enough for a tie for fourth in the conference. Austin Vetterl has 20 points under his belt while Manraj Hayer and Jerret Smith have chipped in with 18 and 16, respectively.
Derek Dunn and Matt Hewitt have split time nearly down the middle in the UBC net, with Hewitt making 14 starts and Dunn making 10. Both goalies are hovering around a 3.50 goals-against average and just under a .900 save percentage.
