• The Rams could clinch a playoff spot with a win on Saturday, but would need some help on the out-of-town scoreboard. They'd need a win over the Golden Bears combined with either a Calgary win over Manitoba, or a UBC win over Saskatchewan.
Â
• After beating Manitoba last game for their first win of the season, the Golden Bears will be looking at Saturday's game as a must-win to keep their playoff hopes alive. Alberta can't be mathematically eliminated from the postseason with a loss to the Rams, but their postseason chances would definitely be on life support.
Â
• The last time the Rams went to Foote Field, it turned out to be the highlight of the season...for Alberta. The Golden Bears recorded what would be their only win of the year after outlasting the No. 4-ranked Rams by a 19-18 score.
CHASING TEALE: QB
Noah Picton now has two major Canada West passing records in sight, both held by former Rams pivot Teale Orban. Picton is 34 completions behind Orban's record of 685 and is now just 403 passing yards behind Orban's mark of 9449, which he set during his five-season career with the Rams that spanned from 2004 to 2008.
Â
SCHOOL TOUCHDOWN MARKS SET TO FALL: A pair of major University of Regina records held by
Jason Clermont and Chad Goldie are about to go down. RB
Atlee Simon is tied with Clermont for the school's all-time lead with 26 touchdowns scored, while SB
Mitchell Picton has matched Goldie for tops in U of R history with 21 career touchdown catches. Of Simon's 26 touchdowns, a school-record 19 of them have been rushing majors.
Â
RECEIVING NUMBERS: SB
Mitchell Picton is poised to move up the U of R's career list in receiving yards. He comes into the Alberta game with 2129 yards in his five seasons with the Rams, just 40 behind third-place
Jason Clermont's career total of 2169. Picton would need a herculean final three games to catch all-time leader Jared Janotta in the category, though Chad Goldie's second-place total of 2458 might be a realistic target.
Â
RUSHING NUMBERS: In the barnburner win over Saskatchewan, RB
Atlee Simon rushed 18 times for a total of 163 yards while also catching seven passes for 72 yards. But he actually dropped from fifth to sixth on the U of R's career list for average yards per rush – not because Simon's own average of 5.7 yards per carry was lowered after his massive game, but because QB
Noah Picton took over as the school's all-time leader in the category. Picton became eligible for the list after he had his 100
th career rush against the Huskies, and his average of 6.5 yards per rush is quite comfortably ahead of second-place Luke Derkson's career average of 6.1.
Â
DEFENSIVE LEADERS: The Rams have a pair of players among the conference's defensive leaders. Rookie LB
Nick Cross is Canada West's leader in tackles with 28 solo and 19 assisted for a five-game total of 37½, while DL
Nicholas Dheilly is second in the conference in sacks (3½), tied for second in tackles for loss (5½), and also tied for second in forced fumbles (2).
Â
RETURN OF SCHIENBEIN: After missing the Week 2 and Week 3 games due to injury, SB
Ryan Schienbein was a welcome re-addition to the lineup beginning with the Manitoba game. In the two games since his return he's had 19 catches for a total of 221 yards, and now ranks third in the nation with an average of 7.7 receptions per game.
Â
VARGA TO MAKE RAMS DEBUT: One of the prizes of the team's 2017 recruiting class, LB
Ryder Varga will make his Canada West debut on Saturday wearing No. 56. Varga, another product of the vaunted LeBoldus program in Regina, is listed third on the depth chart at zack linebacker but is more likely to make an impact on special teams for the Rams. This will almost certainly be Varga's only appearance in a Rams uniform this season in order to preserve his initial year of U SPORTS eligibility.
