Cougars outlast MRU in shootout thriller

The University of Regina men's hockey team picked up its first win of the 2017-18 Canada West season in style on Friday night, taking a 2-1 win in a shootout to earn a 7-6 road win over Mount Royal.

Ian McNulty and Zak Zborosky (pictured) scored in the shootout for Regina and Michael Herringer made a spectacular pad stop on MRU's Josh Bly to seal the deal.

The 70 minutes of ice time prior to the shootout were a back-and-forth affair, as Colton Sparrow, Ben Duperreault, Austin Bourhis, Tristan Frei, Zborosky and McNulty all scored for Regina. Connor Rankin, Zack Henry, Brad Kennedy (2), Jamal Watson and Luke Simpson countered for MRU.

The score was 3-3 after the first period, and 4-4 after the second before the teams traded another goal each at the start of the third. Frei scored his first of the season at the 15:59 mark but MRU pulled their goalie late in the third and found the equalizer with less than a minute to go.

MRU outshot the Cougars 4-0 in the two overtime periods, as the Cougars killed off a Cody Fowlie hooking penalty in the first extra frame.

After Isaac Schacher was victim to a well-timed poke check from Wyatt Hoflin, Kennedy scored to give MRU an advantage in the shootout. McNulty slipped a shot five hole and Jamie King was stopped by Herringer, leading to Zborosky's low shot that put Regina up for good.

Herringer tallied 32 saves on the night for his first win in a Cougar jersey, while Hoflin made 17 shots for MRU.

The Cougars and MRU will battle again on Saturday afternoon, with faceoff scheduled for 3 p.m.
