Cougars win all three at Calgary Cup

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3

The University of Regina's women's basketball team won three consecutive games to win the Calgary Cup, a four-team non-conference tournament hosted by the University of Calgary.

The Cougars started out the tournament on Thursday with an 88-67 win over AUS opponent Acadia, then took an 81-64 win over Waterloo before defeating the host Dinos by a lopsided 82-40 score on Saturday for their fourth consecutive win.

"I was happy with our compete factor on defence in two of the three games," Cougars head coach Dave Taylor said. "It was a good measuring stick for us as we get ready for another challenging few games this coming weekend at home."

The U of R will now host the Cougar Classic at home this weekend. The Cougars will play Windsor on Thursday night (7:00), Saskatchewan on Saturday night (6:00), and Brandon on Sunday afternoon (1:00) at the CKHS. Other games will feature Saskatchewan and Windsor on Friday night (6:00) and Brandon and Windsor on Saturday night following the conclusion of the Cougars/Saskatchewan game.

Thursday - Cougars 88, Acadia 67 [box score]
The Cougars took control with a 28-7 run in the first half and never looked back, leading by double digits the rest of the way and going on an 11-0 run in the third to end any hopes of an Acadia comeback.

Kyanna Giles led Regina with 14 points and also had a team-leading nine rebounds, while Carolina Goncalves and Charlotte Kot both scored 12. Christina McCusker added 10 points in just 16 minutes for the Cougars, while four players - Kyia Giles, Sara Hubenig, Michaela Kleisinger, and Lauryn Prokop - all had seven points.

Acadia's Paloma Anderson, a two-time first-team All-Canadian, led all players with 18 points.

Friday - Cougars 81, Waterloo 64 [box score]
Much like the Acadia win, the Cougars went on a big first-half run and led the rest of the way in their Friday victory over Waterloo. This time it was a 14-2 run over five minutes after Waterloo had jumped into the lead, and another 8-0 run shortly thereafter gave the Cougars a double-digit lead they'd hold on to for the rest of the contest.

Goncalves scored a game-high 17 points for the Cougars while also leading all players with six steals. Britton Belyk provided a big offensive spark off the bench, shooting 5-for-9 from the field and scoring 12 points in 14 minutes played. Kleisinger added 14 points in the win, while McCusker scored 10 points for the second straight night.

Hilary Ferguson led Waterloo with 15 points.

Saturday - Cougars 82, Calgary 40 [box score]
Taylor called this game "as good a first half as we have played" on Twitter, and it's easy to see why. The Cougars dominated this from start to finish, leading 25-7 after the first quarter and outscoring the Dinos 20-3 in the second to take a 45-10 lead into halftime. At one point in the first half, the Cougars had scored 24 consecutive points as they excelled on both sides of the ball.

Kyanna Giles finished one rebound short of a double-double for the second time in the tournament, scoring 17 points and finishing with a team-high nine boards. Kot added 16 points, Belyk chipped in with 11, and Avery Pearce had 10 points. Kyia Giles also contributed in several areas with five points, six rebounds, and a game-high five assists.

Brianna Ghali's 13 points led Calgary's offence.
