The University of Regina's women's basketball team now has a 5-0 record in Canada West play after recording a big 88-53 road win over UNBC on Friday night in Prince George, B.C.
Back with the Cougars after missing the last three games while with Portugal's senior national team,
Carolina Goncalves came off the bench to lead the U of R with 19 points in 20 minutes played. Goncalves hit two of her three three-point attempts and was 7-for-13 from the field overall while also earning a game-high six steals.
Three other Cougars also hit double figures in scoring, including rookie post
Lauryn Prokop. Prokop was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field, 4-for-4 from the line, and finished with a career-high 14 points.
Kyanna Giles added 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds, while
Sara Hubenig scored 10.
Madison Landry led UNBC with 25 points in a losing cause.
The Cougars never trailed on Friday, leading 16-11 after the opening period and scoring the first 10 points of the second quarter to open up a 15-point lead. They held a 38-24 advantage at halftime, but a 22-4 run in the third quarter for Regina gave the visitors complete control of the game.
The win gives the No. 1-ranked Cougars 14 consecutive victories, including nine in non-conference play and now five straight to start the Canada West schedule. They'll try to make it 15 in a row on Saturday night (5:00) in a rematch with UNBC.
