The University of Regina men's hockey team will have to settle for a weekend split with the Calgary Dinos, as the ninth-ranked Dinos skated to a 3-2 win at the Father David Bauer Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Ian McNulty and Tristan Frei scored for the visiting Cougars, but goals from Cain Franson, Chris Collins and Mitch Cook powered the Dinos to victory.
Michael Herringer stopped 25 shots in net for the Cougars, who drop to 2-8-2 on the Canada West season. Jordan Papirny made 25 saves between the pipes for the Dinos.
McNulty kicked off the scoring just 39 seconds into Saturday's contest, deflecting an Isaac Schacher wrist shot under Papirny's glove. Cook evened up the score roughly five minutes later, tucking away a rebound after Herringer made a fine pad save on a shot from Dane Gibson.
Calgary took its first lead of the game with just 11 seconds to play in the second period, with Collins scoring his fourth on a deflection. The Dinos added an insurance marker at the 5:44 mark of the third period, as Franson beat Herringer to the glove side.
Frei scored his second of the weekend just 37 seconds later off a setup from Colton Sparrow, but the Cougars failed to find the equalizing goal in the final minutes.
Regina will be back at home next weekend as the Lethbridge Pronghorns will visit The Co-operators Centre for a weekend set.
