Conor Morgan's 36 points led UBC to a 96-73 win over the Regina Cougars in Canada West men's basketball action on Friday night at the War Memorial Gym in Vancouver.
The loss snaps the U of R's seven-game winning streak, which was tied for the longest in program history.
Morgan was 14-for-24 from the field including 3-for-8 from three-point range and also added 10 rebounds for a double-double. Morgan also had four steals, three blocks, and three assists for UBC, which improves to 9-3 with the win.
The Cougars actually led after the first quarter after
Shawn Lathan outscored the entire UBC team by a 9-3 margin in the final two and a half minutes of the opening period, helping Regina to an 18-16 lead. But the second quarter was all Thunderbirds, with UBC going on a 13-2 run to take the lead for good. Morgan was nearly unstoppable in the second, as the fifth-year forward scored 17 of the team's first 19 points of the period to help UBC take a 44-33 lead into halftime.
Regina got to within five points in the third quarter thanks to early back-to-back triples by
Benjamin Hillis and Lathan, but that was as close as the Cougars would get. UBC's 11-2 run early in the fourth turned an eight-point lead into a 17-point advantage, putting the game away for the Thunderbirds.
Besides Morgan's outburst, UBC also had 14-point performances from both Phil Jalalpoor and Grant Audu. Jalalpoor also had six rebounds and six assists for the Thunderbirds.
Four players hit double figures in scoring for the Cougars, who fall to 7-2 on the season with the loss. Lathan led the way with 19 points,
Brian Ofori scored 17,
Samuel Hillis had 13, and
Brandon Tull scored 11.
Alex Igual added seven points while leading the Cougars with eight rebounds.
The two teams will close out the weekend series on Saturday night (7:00 PST) in Vancouver.
