The University of Regina men's hockey team was less than 20 minutes away from an upset win over the No. 3-ranked Saskatchewan Huskies, but two third-period goals lifted the Huskies to the win on home ice.
Collin Shirley, Jordan Tkatch and Logan McVeigh scored for the Huskies, who improve to 12-2-1 on the Canada West season. Zak Zborosky and Jordan Burns found the net for the Cougars (3-10-2).
Regina opened the scoring at the 5:03 mark of the first period, with Burns going off the crossbar and in with a slap shot to collect his first goal as a Cougar. Shirley evened up the score in the second but the Cougars took the lead back at 3:57 of the third period as November's WHL Graduate of the Month, Zborosky, scored off a feed from Cody Fowlie for his ninth of the season.
The Cougar lead lasted just 19 seconds as Tkatch put a rebound past Dawson MacAuley to even the score. The Huskies netted the game winner at the 9:01 mark, with McVeigh putting home another rebound to stave off the Cougar upset.
MacAuley made 33 saves in his third start of the season, while Jordon Cooke stopped 21 shots for the Huskies.
The two teams will close the first half of the Canada West season at The Co-operators Centre in Regina on Saturday night in the annual ShineOn game.
