The University of Regina's women's basketball team trailed UBC by as many as 13 points in the first half on Saturday in Vancouver, but the Cougars were nearly unstoppable after halftime and won 72-56 to complete a weekend sweep over the Thunderbirds.
UBC's Ali Norris converted a three-point play that put the home side up 31-18 with just under four minutes left in the second quarter, but it was all Cougars after that.
Regina brought the deficit down to eight points by the halftime break and simply exploded in the third quarter. The Cougars scored 10 consecutive points which at one point featured three straight
Charlotte Kot field goals, putting them into the lead for the first time. UBC battled back to take a pair of leads early in the fourth, but the Cougars finished the game on a 15-2 run to sprint away for their ninth Canada West victory of the season.
The Cougars ended up outscoring UBC 19-8 in the third, 26-13 in the fourth, and 45-21 in the second half overall.
Kyanna Giles led the Cougars with 25 points and also pulled down 10 rebounds to notch her second double-double of the season. Kot was also solid for Regina, going 9-for-14 from the field and finishing with 19 points.
Kyia Giles added 10 points off the bench for the Cougars, while
Michaela Kleisinger had five points, five rebounds, and tied
Sara Hubenig for the team lead with five assists.
Marcie Schlick also had a double-double for UBC, which falls to 4-8 with the loss. Schlick had 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Thunderbirds.
The Cougars will now take a month-long break from the Canada West schedule before resuming conference action at home against Mount Royal on Jan. 5 and Jan. 6. Regina heads into the break ranked No. 3 in the nation, tied for first in the Canada West standings with a 9-1 record, and ranked second in the conference with a .654 RPI. Saskatchewan currently leads Canada West with a .704 RPI.
