The University of Regina women's hockey team closed its Canada West regular season schedule with an overtime win, prevailing 2-1 against the hometown Calgary Dinos on Saturday night.
Jaycee Magwood (pictured) netted the winner for the Cougars, deflecting in a shot from
Alexis Larson at the 2:35 mark of the extra frame. Rookie
Merissa Zerr scored in regulation for the Cougars, while Delaney Frey replied for the Dinos (4-19-1-4).
The Cougars needed extra time to dispose of the Dinos on Saturday, despite outshooting Calgary 41-17 in regulation. The Cougars added five more shots in the overtime period, while Calgary had none. Kelsey Roberts did all she could in net for Calgary, making 44 saves in the loss.
Jane Kish had 16 saves for her 10th win of the season.
Though the game had no playoff implications for the Cougars, they earn the split with the win and finish the regular season with a 10-13-4-1 record.
The Cougars will hit the road for a Canada West best-of-three semifinal series on the weekend, traveling to Saskatoon to take on the provincial-rival Huskies. Regina took three of the four regular season meetings with the Huskies, including wins in both of the matches at Saskatoon's Rutherford Arena.
