Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Huskies take 2-1 victory and quarterfinal series

It was Kaitlin Willoughby's goal at the 16:25 mark of the third period that proved to be the difference as the University of Regina women's hockey team fell 2-1 to the Saskatchewan Huskies on Saturday night.

Bailee Bourassa also scored as the fourth-seeded Huskies completed the sweep of the Canada West quarterfinal series. Jolene Kirkpatrick answered for the Cougars.

The Huskies got on the board first for the second-consecutive night, scoring late in the first after a scramble in the neutral zone. The puck found its way to the stick of Courtney Cormack who sent a high shot towards the Cougar goal. The wrist shot deflected off the shoulder of Bourassa on the way to the net and floated over Jane Kish's outstretched glove to put Saskatchewan on top.

The second period passed with no score, as the Huskies outshot Regina 17-14 through 40 minutes.

The Cougars turned up the pressure in the third period, sending 18 shots towards Cassidy Hendricks and finally breaking through at the 9:33 mark. It was Kirkpatrick scoring her first goal of the year and second of her career, as the fourth-year defenceman celebrated her birthday by tying the game. Kylee Kupper put a shot towards the net and the rebound sat loose in traffic. Emma Waldenberger had a try but the puck slipped out of her reach. Kirkpatrick had pinched up from the blue line and was able to put it away to even the score.

The play went back and forth for several minutes until Friday's hero for Saskatchewan picked up a loose puck in the Cougar end. Willoughby swooped in and put a low shot towards the far post, rattling it off the bar and in for her fourth of the weekend.

The Cougars pulled Kish with 2:28 to play and had a number of chances, including 52 seconds of six-on-four after Cormack was sent off for cross-checking. Regina was unable to beat Hendricks for a second time, and the Huskie defence sealed the win.

Kish made 21 saves between the pipes for the Cougars. Hendricks stopped 31 Cougar efforts at the other end of the rink.

"I'm really proud of all of the girls, we battled our hearts out and left everything on the ice," fifth-year defender and team captain Alexis Larson said after the game. "The team was awesome, they really treated us fifth years great and made it a really special season.

"I'm super thankful for the people I've met, teammates and coaches I've worked with and all the people at the U of R," Larson added. "It's been a once in a lifetime opportunity, and all those people helped me live my dreams out."

The Cougars will graduate fifth-year players Larson, Kylie Gavelin, Meghan Sherven and Krista Metz from the program.
