The University of Regina's men's basketball team led for more than 35 minutes on Friday night, but surrendered a late run to Winnipeg as the Wesmen collected a 102-93 victory in a Canada West game at the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium on the U of W campus.
After holding the lead for almost the entire game, the Wesmen scored 13 consecutive points in the fourth quarter to turn what had been a six-point Regina advantage into a 94-87 Winnipeg lead with just over a minute to go.
The Cougars battled back to make it a one-possession game after back-to-back buckets by
Alex Igual, but Winnipeg went 8-for-8 from the free throw line in the final 30 seconds to seal the win.
It was a critical late-season contest for both teams, as Winnipeg (11-6) has already clinched a playoff spot and is looking to maximize its RPI for playoff seeding and the Cougars are looking to nail down a postseason berth. At least one of Thompson Rivers (8-8), Mount Royal (8-9), Brandon (8-11), Fraser Valley (7-9), Victoria (7-9), or Regina (7-10) will miss out on the postseason, with MacEwan (6-11) lurking behind the trio of seven-win teams.
Sean Tarver had a huge game off the bench for Winnipeg, scoring 21 points including two critical buckets during the Wesmen's late 13-0 run. Denzel Lynch-Blair (18 points), Jamar Farley (16), Ryan Oirbans (14), Narcisse Ambanza (13), and Marcello Kambola (11) also scored in double figures for Winnipeg.
Brian Ofori (pictured) was 3-for-3 from three-point land and 10-for-13 from the field overall as he led all players with a career-high 25 points. Igual and
Brandon Tull both scored 21 points, while
Travis Sylvestre added 13 points and a team-leading eight rebounds. The Cougars were 59% from the field as a team, but turned the ball over 20 times compared to 14 for Winnipeg and were only 6-for-10 from the free throw line with the Wesmen hitting 16 of 22 from the stripe.
The Cougars will look for a weekend split on Saturday night. They'll tip off against the Wesmen at 7 p.m.
