Cougar Recap
Regina is coming off two home defeats to Mount Royal, falling 8-2 last Friday night before a tight 4-2 decision on Saturday afternoon.
Zach McPhee,
Cody Fowlie,
Tyson Predinchuk and
Tristan Frei were the goal scorers for Regina a weekend ago.
Rookie forward
Zak Zborosky leads the Cougars in points, and is tied for third in the Canada West scoring race after picking up two assists on Friday night. Zborosky's 22 points in 16 games also puts him first in the conference among rookie skaters. Fowlie is second on the team with 17 points while
Ian McNulty (5G, 10A) and
Brody Luhning (1G, 13A) also have point totals in double figures.
Michael Herringer made the start on Friday but gave way to
Dawson MacAuley after a shaky start. MacAuley got the call on Saturday and went the distance, making 32 saves in the loss. Herringer has posted an .855 save percentage and a 5.15 goals-against average this season, while MacAuley has hit numbers of .920 and 3.31.
Thunderbird Word
UBC enters the weekend in fourth place in Canada West, partly in thanks to receiving credit for two wins over Calgary due to a player eligibility issue from losses back in October. The T-Birds faced off against Calgary again a weekend ago, taking a 3-2 win in the first game before suffering a 4-2 loss the following afternoon.
Austin Vetterl leads the Thunderbird charge offensively with nine goals and seven assists while first-year forward Tyler Sandhu is right behind him with 15 points. Jerret Smith (13 points), Michael Stenerson (12), Matt Revel (12), Nick Buonassisi (11) and Carter Popoff (10) are next on the UBC scoring list.
Matt Hewitt and Rylan Toth have both seen time between the pipes for UBC, with Hewitt making 13 starts and posting a .906 save percentage. Toth, a rookie, is still looking for his first official Canada West win, notching a .862 save percentage in seven appearances.
The Matchup
UBC picked up two wins against the Cougars on home ice in mid-October, taking 4-2 and 3-2 wins. Zborosky was a large piece of the Cougar attack that weekend, picking up a goal and two assists. The Cougars have the edge in the all-time matchup against UBC, holding a .557 winning percentage against the T-Birds.
