Alexandra Poznikoff scored two powerplay goals in the first period as the No. 1-ranked Alberta Pandas took a 3-0 decision against the University of Regina women's hockey team at The Co-operators Centre on Friday night.
Poznikoff's goals came at the 5:51 and 13:18 marks of the first period, and both were set up by Autumn MacDougall and Lindsay Weech. Poznikoff returned the favour in the third period, setting up MacDougall who beat
Morgan Baker to ice the win for Alberta.
Baker made 23 saves in her seventh start of the season for the Cougars, who fall to 6-11-1-3. Dayna Owen stopped all 23 Cougar efforts for her third shutout of the season as Alberta improves to 10-4-4-3.
Mackenzie Hutchinson and
Emma Waldenberger were each responsible for five of the Cougar shots.
Poznikoff's sixth of the season came off a give-and-go with MacDougall that saw the third-year forward extend her stick with one arm and redirect a pass under the pad of Baker. The second Alberta goal of the first period followed a wild scramble in front of Baker that saw a number of bodies stacked up in the crease. The puck eventually popped free and Poznikoff was there to turn and fire it over the sprawling Cougar goaltender.
MacDougall sealed the deal in the third period, finding a rebound in front of Baker and lifting it home to put the top-ranked team in the nation up 3-0.
The Cougars and Pandas will face off again on Saturday with an afternoon game on tap at The Co-operators Centre. Puck drop is set for 3 p.m.
