The University of Regina men's hockey team fell 7-1 to the Manitoba Bisons in Winnipeg on Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars, who drop to 3-19-2 with the loss, surrendered 40 shots on goal to Manitoba as the Bisons earned the weekend sweep. Remi Laurencelle, Kamerin Nault, Warren Callis, Joel Schreyer, Justin Augert, Lucas Skrumeda and Quintin Lisoway were all able to find the net for Manitoba (14-8-2).
Jordan Burns had the only goal for Regina, as he notched his second of the weekend and third of the Canada West season early in the second period.
Laurencelle and Schreyer were able to beat Michael Herringer for first-period goals before Burns drew the Cougars within one on an unassisted marker at 3:39 of the second period. The Bisons responded with three straight to stretch the lead to 5-1 after 40 minutes, then Augert and Skrumeda topped it off with goals against Brandon Holtby in the third period.
Herringer finished the night with 21 saves on 26 shots while Holtby stopped 13 shots in the third period. Byron Spriggs was near perfect, stopping 26 Cougar efforts to earn the win in goal for Manitoba.
The Cougars will close their Canada West home schedule next weekend as the Calgary Dinos are in town for a weekend set. The Cougars and Dinos met back in November, splitting a pair of games in Calgary.
