The University of Regina women's hockey team survived a late surge from the Lethbridge Pronghorns, earning a 4-3 win and the weekend sweep in Lethbridge on Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars were perfect with the man advantage on Saturday, scoring on all three of their powerplay opportunities.
"I was really happy with our play over the course of the weekend," Cougar head coach Sarah Hodges said following Saturday's win. "We had a more consistent effort and it was nice to get great results on special teams."
Nikki Watters-Matthes (pictured) had two powerplay goals in the second period to lead the Cougars. Jordan Kulbida continued her strong weekend, notching a goal and three assists the day after scoring a goal in a 2-0 win. Chelsea Hallson also found the net for the Cougars, who improve to 3-1-0-0 with the weekend sweep of Lethbridge.
Alli Borrow, Tricia Van Vaerenbergh and Mikaela Reay scored goals for the home side.
Lethbridge was first on the board on Saturday, as Borrow scored her first of the season on the powerplay. The goal came on the powerplay just over five minutes into the first off setups from Mattie Apperson and Katelyn Breitkreuz.
Kulbida answered later in the first period, beating Alicia Anderson with a quick shot from along the side boards.
The second period was the Watters-Matthes show, as the senior defenceman scored two powerplay goals in the frame. The first came at the 3:51 mark off assists from Kulbida and Lilla Carpenter-Boesch, and the second was a shot from the top of the circle with assists again from Kulbida and Carpenter-Boesch.
Regina found themselves on another powerplay in the third period after a tripping penalty on Van Vaerenbergh. This time it was Hallson who converted, scoring her first of the season assisted by Kulbida.
The Pronghorns would get one back midway through the period, as Van Vaerenbergh beat Jane Kish to make it 4-2. Another marker from Reay cut the lead to one with 40 seconds in regulation, but the Cougars held off furious pressure from the Pronghorns and escaped with the win.
Anderson finished the game with 34 saves for Lethbridge while Kish earned another win with 32 stops.
The Cougars will return home next weekend for a weekend set with the 2-2-0-0 Manitoba Bisons.
