The University of Regina fell 4-0 in a Canada West play-in game against the MacEwan Griffins on Friday afternoon.
The match was hosted by the University of Alberta, as the second-seeded Pandas were awaiting the winner of Friday's contest.
Raeghan McCarthy had two first-half goals for MacEwan, and Mara Morrell and Salma Kamel found the net in the second half.
Kylie Bolton was outstanding in goal for the Cougars, making 11 saves on a whopping 15 shots on net from the Griffins. The Griffins had another 15 shots that missed the target, tallying a total of 30 shots on the afternoon. Regina countered with 12 shots, six of which were on net. Emily Burns handled all of them, earning the clean sheet for MacEwan.
The Cougars had the first scoring chance of the match with
Sydney Langen tearing down the left wing and unleashing a shot towards the far post that went just wide. McCarthy's first goal came on a rebound in the 18
th minute, and her second was a laser of a shot that found the top corner in the 45
th.
The halftime score could have been worse for the Cougars, but big saves from Bolton in the 32
nd, 38
th, and 39
th minutes limited the damage. Morrell converted a feed from Brittany Costa in the 58
th minute, and Kamel put the finishing touches on the match with a nice touch in the 64
th minute.
This marks the end of the season for the Cougars, who earned a playoff berth after a 3-9-2 regular season.
