Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Huskies strike early to defeat Cougars

The University of Regina men's hockey team scored two powerplay goals in the fourth period but couldn't complete the comeback, falling 4-2 to the No. 3-ranked Saskatchewan Huskies on Friday evening.

Wyatt Johnson had four points for the home team, scoring two goals and adding two assists. Carson Stadnyk and Logan McVeigh had a goal and an assist each, as the Huskies pick up their sixth win of the young Canada West season.

Tristan Frei (pictured) and Zach McPhee replied for the Cougars. James Hilsendager had two assists and Zak Zborosky picked up his fourth helper of the year.

Dawson MacAuley had a busy night in net for the Cougars, turning aside 41 Huskie shots. Travis Child earned his first win as a Huskie, stopping 28 shots.

After Saskatchewan scored three goals in the first period and another in the second, the Cougars trailed 4-0 heading into the third. Frei picked up his first of the season on the powerplay early in the third, deflecting a Hilsendager point shot to put Regina on the board. McPhee's marker came less than two minutes later, deflecting another point shot from Hilsendager. Frei also got an assist on McPhee's second, but that was as close as the Cougars would get.

It was a physical affair from the start, as Saskatchewan racked up 42 minutes in penalties on 13 infractions, and the Cougars had 30 minutes on 11 penalties.

Saskatchewan wins its fifth-straight game, while the Cougars' two-game win streak is snapped as they fall to 2-4-1.

The two teams will renew the rivalry on Saturday night, with a 7 p.m. matchup at The Co-operators Centre.
