Second-year guard
Faith Reid exploded for 23 second-half points as the University of Regina's women's basketball team completed a weekend road sweep with an 85-75 victory over the Calgary Dinos on Saturday.
Reid, who had never scored more than 12 points in a conference game prior to Saturday's win, was held scoreless in the first half but simply caught fire after the break. She had a four-point play as part of her six points in the third quarter, then went off for five three-pointers and a total of 17 points in the final period alone.
"Faith has that shooter's ability to go from hot to absolutely unconscious, and she did just that tonight when we needed a spark the most," Cougars head coach
Dave Taylor said. "It's always tough to get a sweep on the road in Canada West against a top team, so I'm very pleased with our effort tonight."
The insanity from Reid helped the Cougars take control of a game that they trailed by double digits early in the third. Regina went on a 19-6 run in the third quarter which saw
Kyanna Giles score nine consecutive points for the Cougars, and all of Reid's six third-quarter points capped that run and gave the visitors their first lead since late in the first half.
And Reid took over in the fourth quarter. She opened the period by scoring on each of the team's first four possessions, three of which were triples as she went on a personal 11-0 run which put the Cougars into the lead for good.
Besides Reid's exploits, Giles finished with 15 points, 12 rebounds, six assists, and five steals for the Cougars.
Carolina Goncalves added 14 points, while
Macaela Crone was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field and had eight points and nine rebounds.
Sascha Lichtenwald led Calgary (0-2) with 19 points.
The Cougars (2-0) will now prepare to host their home openers next Friday and Saturday night against Trinity Western. Both of those games will tip off at 6:00 at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
NOTES: Reid's total of six three-pointers is just one short of
Katie Polischuk's school single-game record of seven, a feat which the former Cougar accomplished on two separate occasions.
