Cougars rebound for shutout win at Mount Royal

The University of Regina women's hockey team earned a weekend split with a 3-0 win over Mount Royal University at the Flames Community Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Chelsea Hallson, Emily Middagh and Ireland South scored goals for the Cougars, and Morgan Baker stopped all 19 shots she faced for her second shutout of the season in net.

Hallson opened up the scoring just over six minutes into Saturday's contest with her second of the season coming on the powerplay. Middagh and Tamara McVannel earned assists on the play, as Regina took an early lead for the second consecutive day.

Middagh put the Cougars up 2-0 before the end of the opening period, making a nice move into the slot and firing a wrist shot high over the blocker of Zoe De Beauville. Jaycee Magwood collected her second assist of the weekend on Middagh's first goal as a Cougar.

South would provide even more breathing room for the Cougars, picking off a pass in the neutral zone and beating De Beauville with a low shot to the blocker side midway through the third.

Baker and the Cougar defence would shut things down from there, as MRU could only muster four shots in the final period.

The Cougars improve to 6-6-1-3 with the win, and head into the December break just a point back of Saskatchewan for fourth place in Canada West.
