One night after suffering a 47-point defeat, the University of Regina's men's basketball team put together a fine effort on the road but ultimately fell short in a 105-98 overtime loss to Lethbridge in Game 2 of the Canada West quarterfinal series.
The win sends Lethbridge off to the conference semifinals, where the Pronghorns will play the winner of the Alberta/UNBC series.
It looked like it might be a disastrous night for the Cougars after Lethbridge scored the first 10 points of the game, but Regina quickly righted the ship with
Shaquille Harris leading the charge. Harris scored nine of his 24 points in the first quarter alone and Lethbridge led just 24-23 after the first quarter, and the two teams went into halftime knotted at 45-45.
The Cougars went on a nice 11-2 run in the third, turning what had been a 54-53 deficit into a 64-56 lead with five different players scoring during that span. They increased the lead to 10 thanks to an
Alex Igual triple with two minutes left in the quarter, but Lethbridge battled back in the fourth. The Cougars went without a field goal for five and half minutes, which allowed the Pronghorns to score eight straight points and take their first lead since early in the third.
It was a one-possession game for the final seven minutes of regulation, and after a
Benjamin Hillis free throw made it 89-89 with just over 30 seconds to go both teams missed opportunities from deep to send it to an extra session. Kyle Peterson first missed a three for Lethbridge, and the Cougars had an opportunity to win it at the buzzer but Igual's triple from the right wing rimmed out.
But Lethbridge pulled away in overtime.
The Pronghorns scored on their first three possessions to go up 95-89 and while Harris replied with a bucket to get the Cougars to within four, Lethbridge got the next five points and never looked back. Igual threw up a half-hearted 30-footer at the buzzer which actually went in, but by that point the outcome had long since been decided.
Zac Overwater was monstrous for Lethbridge, somehow managing to overshadow Peterson's 30-point, 12-asssist performance by piling up 43 points and 16 rebounds for a massive double-double in the win.
Igual finished with a team-high 27 points for Regina, while Harris' 24 points and nine rebounds came in 29 quality minutes off the bench. Igual also had 13 rebounds, one short of his career high in his final U SPORTS game. Also playing in his final game in a U of R uniform was
Brandon Tull, who was an efficient 6-for-10 from the field and finished with 15 points.
Both teams shot exactly 42.9% from the field and had similar rebounding and turnover numbers – Regina had 47 rebounds and 18 turnovers while Lethbridge had 43 and 16 – but the difference in Saturday's game was at the stripe. The Cougars hit only 17 of their 30 attempts from the free throw line, while Lethbridge was 30-for-39.
NOTES: Besides Igual and Tull, the Cougars will also graduate
Brian Ofori from this year's roster.
