Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Pandas take 2-1 win to complete sweep of Cougars

The University of Regina women's hockey team was swept by the Alberta Pandas in a Canada West quarterfinal series following a 2-1 defeat at the Clare Drake Arena on Saturday evening.

The No. 4-ranked Pandas held on following a late push by the Cougars for the second-straight game, as Regina outshot Alberta 10-2 in the final frame but was unable to find the equalizing goal late.

Amy Boucher and Deanna Morin scored for the Pandas, while goaltender Kirsten Chamberlin picked up her second win in as many nights with a 23-save effort. Sam Geekie scored the game's lone marker for the Cougars and Morgan Baker made 16 saves between the pipes.

Boucher got the home team on the board midway through the first period, sneaking a quick shot to the short side past Baker. Morin doubled the lead in the second period with her first of the playoffs following a Cougar turnover in their own zone.

Geekie got the Cougars on the board at the 12:15 mark of the final frame, sending a shot from the point that found a lane and beat a screened Chamberlin. Martina Maskova and Merissa Zerr picked up assists on the goal.

Regina continued the pressure in the remaining ten minutes, but Chamberlin shut the door on the Cougars for the second-straight game.

The Pandas will visit the No. 1-ranked Manitoba Bisons next weekend in a Canada West semifinal, while the Cougars' season comes to a close.

With the weekend result, fifth-year skaters Kylee Kupper, Bailey Braden and Nikki Watters-Matthes have all concluded their careers with the Cougars.
