The University of Regina's men's hockey team hosted the four-team, four-game Fall Showcase non-conference tournament on Friday and Saturday at The Co-operators Centre, opening the season with a loss to Saskatchewan but recovering for a win over SAIT in the second game.
The Cougars have two more tune-up games before the Canada West schedule starts. They'll meet York on Thursday night (7:00) in Lumsden, then will travel to Winnipeg for a non-conference game against Manitoba on Saturday.
Friday – Saskatchewan 4, Regina 0
Saskatchewan got goals from Connor Gay and Carson Stadnyk to lead 2-0 after the opening 20 minutes, added another from Michael Sofillas in the middle frame, and then got one from Gordie Ballhorn to finish off the scoring in the third.
Dawson MacAuley started in net for the Cougars and played the first two periods, while
Brandon Holtby played the final stanza for the U of R.
Saturday – Regina 7, SAIT 3
The Cougars got seven goals from seven different players in the win over SAIT, including three from
Corwin Stevely,
Conner Chaulk, and
Keith Anderson in the first five minutes of the game.
Zach McPhee,
Connor Odelein,
Tanner Campbell, and
Arthur Miller also scored for the Cougars, while Stevely (pictured) and Anderson both had two helpers to record three-point nights in the win.
Zak Zborosky also had a pair of assists for the Cougars.
Michael Herringer got the start in net for the U of R and allowed just one goal in 40 minutes of action. Holtby again came in for the final period.
