Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Cougars fall 3-2 in hard-fought overtime game

The University of Regina men's hockey team battled hard but fell 3-2 in overtime against Mount Royal University in Calgary on Saturday afternoon.

MRU, who completed the weekend sweep with the win, got a goal with just over two minutes left in overtime from defender Jesse Lees to win it. Ryley Lindgren and David Stephens also scored for Mount Royal while Riley Morris made 19 saves in net for his second win of the season.

Tate Coughlin and Corey Kosloski (pictured) replied with powerplay goals for the Cougars, who drop their fifth-consecutive game against MRU.

The Cougars were first on the scoreboard on Saturday, as Coughlin found himself alone in front of the net to put away a rebound for his first Canada West goal. Lindgren replied with a one-timer less than three minutes later and Stephens scored again before the end of the first period to give MRU the lead heading into the break.

Regina drew even late in the second period as Kosloski beat Morris with a low shot to the blocker side on the powerplay. Kosloski's first of the season was the last goal in regulation, as the two teams headed to extra time knotted at 2-2.

Lees was the hero for MRU, ripping a shot over Dawson MacAuley in the overtime period to give the home team the win and weekend sweep.

MacAuley played well in his first start of the season, making 33 saves including 17 stops in the second period.

The Cougars (0-1-1) will return home next season for their first regular-season action at The Co-operators Centre, hosting the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Oct. 12 and 13. Lethbridge dropped two games at home against UBC this weekend.
