Jensen Smigelsky scored her first goal in U SPORTS competition, and Jane Kish made 26 saves as the Regina Cougars skated to a 3-1 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns at the Great Lakes Challenge in Kincardine, Ont.

As they did in each of the previous two games on the weekend, the Cougars opened the scoring.

Smigelsky was in the right place at the right time, swatting a rebound off the end wall behind Lethbridge netminder Jessica Lohues late in the opening period.

"It feels good to get my first goal," said Smigelsky. "To be honest, I don't really know what happened there. The puck came out from behind the net off the first shot, and I guess I was just in the right spot."

It looked as though the Cougars would take the 1-0 lead into the intermission, but a late powerplay chance lead to Emma Waldenberger's second goal of the weekend. Waldenberger deflected a Kaitlyn Crowe point shot past Lohues, giving the Cougars a two-goal cushion heading into the period break.

In the second period, Lethbridge cut the Cougar lead in half when Delaney Duchek deflected a centering pass from the corner past Kish. The Cougars found themselves in some penalty trouble in the middle period, taking back-to-back minors that afforded Lethbridge a lengthy spell of powerplay time. The Cougars weathered the storm, taking a 2-1 lead into the third.

Jaycee Magwood (pictured) added a third period breakaway goal, slipping the puck past Lohues just as a Cougar penalty expired. Magwood was Regina's top scorer in the Great Lakes Challenge, finishing the weekend with three goals.

Regina completed the preseason portion of their schedule with a 5-1 record, including a 3-1 mark against U SPORTS opponents.

The Cougars now get set to open their Canada West hockey season against the visiting Mount Royal Cougars with games on Friday and Saturday.
