Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Quick start leads Huskies past Cougars

Three first period goals led the No. 10-ranked Saskatchewan Huskies to a 4-1 win in the first game of a home-and-home series against the University of Regina women's hockey team on Friday night.

Brooklyn Haubrich, Bailee Bourassa and Kennedy Brown found the net in the first period, while Abby Shirley stretched the lead to 4-0 late in the second. Jaycee Magwood got the Cougars on the board with her sixth of the season later in the second period for the lone Cougar goal.

Jessica Vance was the winner in goal for the Huskies, making 27 saves. Jane Kish made the start for the Cougars but was chased from the net after the first period. Kish finished with 11 saves while Morgan Baker stopped 21 shots in relief.

After Haubrich converted a rebound in the first, Bourassa rifled a shot to the top corner to double the lead. Brown scored the third goal for the home team with another high shot over the glove of Kish.

Shirley converted another one late in the second period, before Magwood elected to shoot on a two-on-one and beat Vance.

The Huskies move to 8-6-4-1 with the win, while Regina drops to 7-8-1-3 and falls seven points back of fourth-place Saskatchewan.

The Cougars and Huskies will play for the final time in the regular season on Saturday night, with a 7:00 p.m. showdown at The Co-operators Centre in Regina.
