The University of Regina men's hockey team fell 5-1 against the Saskatchewan Huskies at Merlis Belsher Place in Saskatoon on Saturday night, as the No. 3-ranked Huskies completed the weekend sweep of the home-and-home series.
Carter Folk, Parker Thomas, Layne Young, Logan McVeigh and Shane Collins found the net for the Huskies, who improve to 17-3-0. Tyler Kreklewich replied for the Cougars, netting his second of the season late in the third period.
Taran Kozun stopped 25 Cougar shots for his 13th win of the season and Dawson MacAuley made 39 saves between the pipes for the Cougars.
Saskatchewan (17-3-0) got on the board early again with Folk converting a cross-ice pass from Donovan Neuls just over two minutes into the contest. Thomas found the net in the second period, completing a three-on-one break with a nice move to the close post.
Leading 2-0 after 40 minutes, the Huskies all but put the game away early in the third period with goals from Young and McVeigh in the first two and a half minutes of the frame. Collins notched the first goal of his Canada West career midway through the third before the Cougars would get on the board.
Kreklewich scored off assists from Zak Zborosky and Connor Odelein with less than seven minutes left, snapping a quick shot under the blocker of Kozun.
It was a chippy affair again, as the two teams combined for 96 penalty minutes.
The Cougars (3-16-1) will be back at The Co-operators Centre next weekend, with the Manitoba Bisons in town. The Huskies will visit the Lethbridge Pronghorns for a weekend set.
