Cougars complete weekend sweep over TRU

The University of Regina's women's basketball team won its second game over Thompson Rivers in as many nights on Saturday after a 72-44 win over the WolfPack at the Tournament Capital Centre.

After a slow start in Friday's game, the Cougars were better out of the gate on Saturday as they led 23-12 after the opening period and were up 37-28 at halftime. They then followed Friday's script with an extremely strong second half, going on a 14-5 run in the third and outscoring Thompson Rivers by a 34-17 margin in the final two quarters.

"I thought our defensive effort was way better," Cougars head coach Dave Taylor said. "They hit a couple difficult shots, but overall it was much improved. We figured our depth would wear them down late in the game, and if we had a good start we were confident we'd be okay in the second half."

The win improves Regina's record to 13-3 on the season. The Cougars are tied with Calgary for third in the Canada West standings in terms of winning percentage and sit fourth in RPI with just two weekends remaining in conference play.

Kyanna Giles again led the Cougars in scoring as she finished with 13 points, seven rebounds, and a game-high four steals. Avery Pearce and Faith Reid both scored 11 points off the bench for Regina, while Carolina Goncalves and Michaela Kleisinger both had nine points. All of Kleisinger's nine points came on her three first-half triples.

Michelle Bos had a big double-double for Thompson Rivers, finishing with 20 points and 14 rebounds.

The Cougars will now prepare for their final road weekend of Canada West play. They'll head to Winnipeg for games next Friday and Saturday against a Wesmen team that's currently 6-10 and battling for one of the final postseason berths.

Following the Winnipeg weekend, the Cougars will close out the Canada West schedule with home games against the University of Saskatchewan on Feb. 1 and Feb. 2.
