The No. 9-ranked University of Regina's women's basketball team had six different players score in double figures on Saturday night in a 79-66 road win over Winnipeg at the Duckworth Centre.
Â
Macaela Crone and
Kyanna Giles both had 13 points,
Kyia Giles and
Carolina Goncalves both scored 11, and
Michaela Kleisinger and
Christina McCusker both chipped in with 10 points in the win.
Angela Bongomin fell just short of joining the group, scoring eight points in 13 minutes off the bench.
Â
Regina's well-rounded offence was in stark contrast to Winnipeg's, as the Wesmen got the conference's leading scorer back in the lineup after missing Friday's game. Faith Hezekiah attempted a Canada West-record 41 shots from the field and led all players with 35 points in the loss.
Â
"We knew (Hezekiah) was going to come out and gun," Regina head coach
Dave Taylor said. "I actually thought we did a pretty good job for someone who got 35 points. If it's going to take 41 shots, we're okay with that. Fourteen-for-41, we'll live with that percentage."
Â
The Cougars have now won six consecutive games and sport a 15-3 Canada West record. Heading into the final week of the conference schedule, the team has the fourth-best RPI in Canada West and could finish the season anywhere from third to fifth in that category.
Â
Winnipeg (6-12) will go into the final weekend of the season tied with MacEwan for the final Canada West postseason berth. The Wesmen finish off the season with a home-and-home against Manitoba.
Â
Regina is back at home next weekend for two home games against No. 5-ranked Saskatchewan (18-2). Tip-off is set for 6:00 PM on both Friday and Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
