Vikes get buzzer beater to score 70-69 win over Cougars

Katie Langdon's bucket at the buzzer lifted the Victoria Vikes to a 70-69 win over the No. 10-ranked Regina Cougars on Saturday night in a Canada West women's basketball game in Victoria.

Trailing by one with time winding down, Victoria's Ashlyn Day drove baseline and found a cutting Langdon down low. Langdon hit the uncontested layup as time expired, giving the Vikes the victory less than a day after suffering a 35-point loss to the Cougars.

The loss snaps a streak of seven straight conference wins for the Cougars, who fall to 9-3 on the season.

Amira Giannattasio played in 39 of 40 minutes and led the way with 24 points for Victoria. Langdon's game-winning basket put the exclamation mark on a 17-point, 12-rebound double-double while Day chipped in with 10 points for the Vikes (7-5).

Kyanna Giles had her third double-double of the year for the Cougars, finishing with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Macaela Crone had her second consecutive big game, going 6-for-8 from the field including a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range to end up with 15 points. Crone, who was 16-for-20 against the Vikes this weekend, is now shooting 59.2% from the field this year to rank second in the conference in the category.

The Cougars will now prepare for their first home games of the 2019 calendar year, as they'll host UBC Okanagan (0-14) next Friday and Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

Victoria is back at home next weekend for two games against Fraser Valley.
