Three second-period goals led the Lethbridge Pronghorns to a 5-2 win over the University of Regina women's hockey team at The Co-operators Centre on Friday night.
Five different scorers found the net for Lethbridge, as the 'Horns continue the undefeated start to their season at 3-0-0-0. Mikaela Reay, Eryn Johanson, Kianna Dietz, Kyra Greig and Sage Sansregret were the goal scorers for the visitors.
Merissa Zerr and
Lilla Carpenter-Boesch replied for the Cougars, who drop to 0-3-0-0.
Though Regina controlled possession for most of the first period, it was the visitors who were first to the scoreboard. The opening goal came shortly after a Cougar powerplay ended, as
Morgan Baker went behind her net to play a long dump-in. Baker left the puck there for her defender but Reay was the first one to it, scooping it up and depositing it in the empty net for her second of the Canada West season.
The Cougars answered in the middle portion of the second period, after a long stay in the Pronghorn zone.
Tamara McVannel stepped into the slot from the point and fired a shot that Zerr got a piece of, tipping it by Alicia Anderson for the powerplay marker.
Jaycee Magwood also picked up an assist on Zerr's first of the year.
The tie game didn't last long, as Johanson pounced on a loose puck in the slot shortly after and beat Baker with a low shot. Regina drew even again less than 90 seconds later, as Carpenter-Boesch was able to net her second of the year after Anderson came out to make a pad save on a shot from
Martina Maskova.Â
The frenzy of second-period goals continued, as the Pronghorns recaptured the lead near the end of the frame. Madison Porter looped behind the Cougar goal and sent a pass in from that missed its intended target but slid right to a trailing Dietz, who capitalized for her third goal of the young season.
Lethbridge wasn't done scoring in the second period, as Alli Borrow was first to a puck in the Cougar corner after a faceoff. Borrow turned and fired a pass in front right on the tape of Greig, who went upstairs to beat Baker and stretch the lead to two goals.
The Cougars couldn't get much going in the third period, despite outshooting the Pronghorns 7-6. Sansregret iced the game with 1:14 to play in the fourth, flipping a backhanded effort from near centre ice into the empty Cougar net.
Anderson finished the night with 23 saves for her third win. Baker made 16 stops for Regina.
The two teams will battle again on Saturday, with a 3 p.m. puck drop at The Co-operators Centre.
