A goal midway through the second half stood up as the lone marker of the game as the University of Saskatchewan Huskies clipped the Regina Cougars by a 1-0 score on Friday afternoon in a Canada West match in Saskatoon.
Taneil Gay scored in the 71st minute for the Huskies. Hannah Zdunich-Costa swung in a corner kick and Gay got to the ball first in the ensuing scramble, sending it past outstretched hands of a sprawling
Kylie Bolton.
The Cougars had several chances to tie it up after Gay's marker, with the visitors' best of the game coming off a dangerous run from
Kirsten Finley. The fifth-year forward got in behind the Huskies' defence, but not Jadyn Steinhauer as the Saskatchewan keeper raced off her line to make one of her eight saves in the contest.
The win moves Saskatchewan (6-2-3) into first place in Canada West's Prairie Division, but both second-place MacEwan and third-place Alberta have a pair of matches in hand on the Huskies.
Regina falls to 3-5-3 with the loss as the Cougars remain entrenched in fifth place in the division with 12 points.
The two teams will finish off the weekend home-and-home on Saturday in Regina. Kickoff is scheduled for high noon at the U of R Field.
