Ireland Perrott's third period goal helped the UBC Thunderbirds to a 2-1 win over the University of Regina women's hockey team at The Co-operators Centre on Friday night.
Ashley McFadden also scored for the visitors, as UBC picks up its second win of the season. Jaycee Magwood replied with her third of the season for the Cougars.
Tory Micklash stopped 13 shots for the win for UBC. Morgan Baker made 14 saves as the Cougars fall to 1-4-0-0.
UBC's first goal was scored five and a half minutes into regulation, while the Cougars were on a powerplay. Regina had circled back into their own zone to pick up the puck, but some confusion in front of Baker left the puck free for a split second. McFadden was forechecking for UBC and was able to bat the puck in to the Cougar net before Regina could clear it away.
The Cougars had a great chance to even the score late in the first period, as Elise Endicott found herself all alone in front, but Micklash was able to get just enough of the puck to deflect it wide. McFadden almost struck again minutes later with a chance in front of a wide open Cougar net, but Tamara McVannel was able to block it and save a sure goal.
After a relatively quiet start to the second frame, the Cougars had their best chance of the period as Paige Hubbard was sent in alone after a multi-player collision in the Cougar end. The rookie Cougar deked to her right and tried to lift it over the pad of Micklash but the UBC netminder got the glove up to make the big save.
Hubbard was creating opportunities again in the third period, rushing up the middle and flipping a backhand that was caught by Micklash. Rylind MacKinnon took a crosschecking penalty on the play, sending Hubbard into the crossbar behind Micklash. The Cougars capitalized 22 seconds later, as Magwood wheeled into the zone, dropped the puck off to McVannel and settled at the point. McVannel sent it back to Magwood who teed it up, ripping a one-timer over the glove of Micklash.
UBC regained the lead near the end of the third period, following a Kaitlyn Crowe tripping penalty. The T-Birds went to the powerplay and it was Perrott finding the net on a one-timer that slipped between the pads of Baker.Â
"It's really encouraging for us to be able to get wins like this amidst adversity," Thunderbirds coach Graham Thomas said. "I thought we played pretty well for 40 minutes, Regina outplayed us in the second period but it's all about finding that consistency."
The Cougars had Baker out of the net for the final 90 seconds, but couldn't solve Micklash.
The Cougars and Thunderbirds will face off again on Saturday, with a 2 p.m. puck drop at The Co-operators Centre.
