The MacEwan Griffins gave themselves a chance at first place in the Prairie Division with a 2-1 road win over the Regina Cougars on Sunday afternoon at the U of R Field.
The result temporarily vaults the Griffins (9-3-2) into first place in the division, but Saskatchewan could overtake MacEwan with a home victory over Alberta in a match that kicks off at 2:00 PM.
The deciding goal came in the 74th minute when Maya Morrell slipped a nice through ball up to Salma Kamel, who broke in alone on Regina keeper
Savannah Williams and made no mistake for her seventh goal of the season.
The match was a bit of déjà vu for the Cougars, who for the second consecutive day held a 1-0 lead at halftime before conceding a pair of goals following the break to end up on the losing end of a 2-1 score. MacEwan's tying marker came early in the second half when Morrell scored her second of the season in the 48th minute.
Regina's goal came in the 39th minute when
Brigit Sinaga sent in a cross from the left which ended up on the foot of
Kyra Vibert. Vibert tapped it home into a wide-open net, notching her second of the season and giving the Cougars the game-opening strike for the second time in as many days.
MacEwan will now await the outcome of the Alberta/Saskatchewan match to find out whether they finish first or second in the Prairie Division. A draw or a Pandas victory will mean the Griffins will finish first and host the winner of the Regina/Victoria play-in game, while a Huskies victory will put the Griffins in second place and pit them against the Lethbridge/UBC winner.
The Cougars (3-8-3) were already locked into the fifth spot in the Prairie Division heading into Sunday's match. The final result of the match in Saskatoon will decide if they travel to Saskatoon or Edmonton to square off with Victoria in the play-in round.
