Cougars fall to NCAA Div. I San Diego State in exhibition play

The University of Regina's women's basketball team travelled to southern California for its final preseason game on Sunday, falling by an 84-52 score to San Diego State in an exhibition matchup.

The Aztecs jumped out to a 25-14 lead after the opening quarter and held a 47-31 advantage at halftime before taking complete control of the contest after the break. SDSU went on a 16-0 run in the third quarter, turning what had been a 14-point advantage into a 30-point stranglehold.

Zayn Dornstauder, a graduate from Regina's Dr. Martin LeBoldus High School, led San Diego State with 16 points in just 13 minutes on the floor. Sophia Ramos (14 points), Baylee Vanderdoes (11), and Mallory Adams (10) also hit double figures in scoring for the Aztecs.

Faith Reid hit four three-pointers and led the Cougars with 14 points. Avery Pearce scored 11 points, while Emily Dewey added 10.

The Cougars, who went 4-2 in their six games against U SPORTS opposition in non-conference action, will now turn their attention to Canada West play. The U of R kicks off the conference schedule this Friday and Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport with games against UBC. Both contests will tip off at 6:00 PM.
