Triple-double machine Kleisinger leads Cougars to win over Winnipeg

One day after recording the first triple-double by a University of Regina player in a Canada West game, Michaela Kleisinger did it again on Saturday as the Cougars took an 84-51 victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

Kleisinger not only scored a game-high 17 points, but also led all players in both rebounds (12) and assists (11) to complete a historic weekend for the fifth-year guard. Kleisinger's total of 11 assists ties the school record for most in a single Canada West game, a mark she also equalled in Friday night's win.

The Cougars led nearly from wire to wire on Saturday, using an early 8-0 run that included a pair of Kleisinger triples to jump out to a double-digit lead midway through the first. Regina led 27-12 after the first quarter and 49-26 at halftime. Winnipeg's best quarter of the weekend came in the third as the Wesmen matched the Cougars with 20 points in the period, but Regina outscored Winnipeg by a 15-5 margin in the fourth.

Besides Kleisinger's triple-double, the Cougars also got a career-high 15 points from fifth-year forward Alexi Rowden. Rowden did most of her damage from the charity stripe, going 9-for-10 from the free throw line. Emily Dewey added 14 points for the Cougars before fouling out, while Zoe Hartmann and Faith Reid both scored nine and Macaela Crone had eight points to go along with 11 rebounds.

Robyn Boulanger scored a team-leading 12 points for Winnipeg, which had only eight players dressed this weekend. Anna Kernaghan added 10 points for the Wesmen (2-4).

The win brings the Cougars back up to .500 for the season as they now sit with a 3-3 conference record. They'll now prepare for a weekend series on the road against the top-ranked team in the nation, as the U of R will play the Saskatchewan Huskies (4-0) next Friday and Saturday in Saskatoon.

Winnipeg will play a Thursday/Saturday home-and-home series with crosstown rival Manitoba (2-2) next weekend. The two teams will play on the U of M campus on Thursday before squaring off 48 hours after that at the Wesmen's Duckworth Centre.
