The UBC Thunderbirds trailed by as many as 11 points in the second half, but went on a huge fourth-quarter run to come up with an 82-71 road win over the Regina Cougars on Saturday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
UBC scored the first 10 points of the final period as part of a massive 23-5 run which turned what had been an eight-point Regina lead late in the third into a double-digit UBC advantage with just over three minutes to go.
The Thunderbirds got contributions from all over the scoresheet as all five starters hit double figures in scoring. Jadon Cohee led the way with 16 points, Grant Shephard scored 15, Zack Moore added 14, Manroop Clair had 13, and Grant Audu chipped in with 12. Moore added 10 rebounds for a double-double and hit two of his game-high four three-pointers during UBC's big run in the fourth.
It was all Cougars to start out, though, as they scored on all three possessions to open the game to open up a quick 8-0 lead. UBC battled back to tie it up at 18-18 after the first period, but the Cougars' 12-3 run in the second quarter helped give them a 37-31 lead at halftime. The U of R lead hit double digits twice in the third quarter and the Cougars still led 58-51 heading into the fourth before UBC's big game-changing run.
Carter Millar scored a team-high 17 points for Regina and also led the Cougars with eight rebounds.
Samuel Hillis added 15 points, while
Greishe Clerjuste scored 13 and
Benjamin Hillis finished with 10.
