Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Merk's shootout goal clinches 3-2 road win for Cougars

Jaycee Magwood and Jenna Merk both scored in the shootout as the University of Regina's women's hockey team took a 3-2 road victory over Saskatchewan on Friday night in Saskatoon.

Magwood scored in the first round of the shootout and after Jane Kish stopped two of three Saskatchewan attempts, Merk stepped up with an opportunity to end the game. And the second-year forward did just that, briefly losing control of the puck while skating in on net but recovering in time to execute a beautiful toe drag before tucking it past Saskatchewan goalie Camryn Drever.

Jordan Kulbida and Tamara McVannel both scored in regulation for the Cougars, who have a perfect record in their three overtime games this season. Winners of four of their past five games, the Cougars are now 3-7-3-0 on the year and sit just four points back of sixth-place Lethbridge in the Canada West standings.

Kish had another strong effort between the pipes for the Cougars, stopping 31 of 33 Saskatchewan shots including five in the second five-minute overtime alone.

Bailee Bourassa had both goals for Saskatchewan, including the game-tying goal with under five minutes to go in the third period. The Huskies are now 5-1-1-3 and are in a three-way tie for third place in the conference standings with 20 points.

The two teams will finish off the home-and-home series on Saturday night in Regina. Game time is set for 7:00 at The Co-operators Centre.
