The University of Regina's women's basketball team chalked up its first conference victory of the season on Thursday as the Cougars cruised to a 67-52 road win over Mount Royal at Kenyon Court in Calgary.
Faith Reid (pictured) helped spark a 12-0 Regina run in the third quarter, which turned a four-point Cougar lead into a 52-36 advantage as the teams headed into the final period. Reid scored five of the U of R's six buckets during one stretch after halftime as the third-year guard piled up 11 of her 14 points in the third quarter alone.
"It was a scrappy early day game," Regina head coach
Dave Taylor said. "We had a strong third quarter, and that turned out to be enough to carry us today."
The win improves Regina's record to 1-2 on the season after the Cougars started out conference play with a pair of home losses to UBC.
Michaela Kleisinger matched Reid with 14 points as the two players tied for the team lead.
Macaela Crone and
Emily Dewey both finished one rebound short of a double-double, as the two forwards each registered 12 points and nine rebounds in the win.
Charity Marlatt and Jenika Martens both had 12 points for Mount Royal, which falls to 1-2 with the setback.
The news wasn't all good for the Cougars on Thursday, though, as Reid suffered an injury early in the fourth quarter and did not return after being helped off the court. Her status for Friday's rematch – set for noon in Calgary – wasn't immediately known after the game.
