The University of Regina women's hockey team was swept in a Canada West quarterfinal series as the UBC Thunderbirds took a 5-1 decision at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre on Saturday evening.
A night after being shut out 5-0 by UBC, the Cougars surrendered five goals again as their season came to a close. Mathea Fischer had a goal and three assists for UBC, and Brielle Bellerive, Hannah Clayton-Carroll, Hannah Korroll and Madison Patrick also scored. Jaycee Magwood replied for the Cougars.
The Cougars had a whopping 62 minutes of penalties on 19 infractions, as the game got out of hand late in the third period resulting in nine penalties and multiple ejections on the Cougar side in the last four minutes.Â
Fischer's goal got the Thunderbirds on the board less than three minutes into Saturday's contest, as the fourth-year forward deflected in a point shot on the powerplay to beat Jane Kish. The second UBC goal came five minutes later, as UBC leading scorer Clayton-Carroll set up Bellerive who beat Kish with a wrist shot to the short side.
The Cougars got one back midway through the first period with a powerplay goal of their own. Tory Micklash was able to make a pad save on a long point shot, but Emma Waldenberger and Magwood were parked right in front of the net and both took a swing at the rebound. Magwood was credited with the goal as the puck was batted under the pad of Micklash for Regina's first goal of the series.
Clayton-Carroll scored her second of the weekend early on in the middle frame, with another powerplay goal at the 2:19 mark that beat a screened Kish. Koroll put UBC up 4-1 shortly after the second intermission, followed by Patrick's second goal of the weekend three minutes later on a shot through traffic.
Kish made one save on four shots before Morgan Baker came on in relief after Clayton-Carroll's goal. Baker stopped 18 shots in nearly two periods of work, while Micklash stopped 14 for UBC.
UBC will move on to visit the defending national champion Manitoba Bisons in a best-of-three semifinal next weekend.
Saturday's game marks the final U SPORTS competition for Cougar captain Waldenberger and fifth-year defender Nikki Watters-Matthes.
