The University of Regina women's basketball team used a second-quarter burst to take control en route to a 72-58 win over the hometown Calgary Dinos in Game 1 of a Canada West semifinal series on Thursday night.
The Cougars used an 11-0 run late in the second quarter to take a 38-26 lead into the halftime break. Macaela Crone scored seven of those 11 points, making four free throws and a triple to build momentum for the Cougars. Crone finished the night with a game-high 17 points off the bench, including a perfect 8-8 from the charity stripe.
Michaela Kleisinger (pictured) also scored in double figures for Regina, drilling four three pointers on her way to 14 points. Carolina Goncalves had nine points and nine rebounds, while Faith Reid scored nine first-half points. Christina McCusker was a presence in the paint for Regina, racking up six blocks to go along with seven points and five boards.
Calgary was as close as six points in the third quarter, but a triple from Goncalves and quick buckets from McCusker and Crone pushed the lead back to double digits. The second half ended up nearly even, as the teams both put up 18 points in the third quarter before the Cougars edged Calgary 16-14 in the final frame.
Calgary's starters struggled mightily on Thursday night, shooting a combined 6-34 from the floor. Courtney Donaldson and Katie Upham paced the Dinos off the bench, scoring 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Friday's Game 2 is set for 6:00 p.m. MST, as the Cougars will look to close out the series and book a berth to the Canada West final as well as secure a spot at the U SPORTS Championship.
