The University of Regina's women's hockey team opened up the 2019-20 season over the weekend with a pair of exhibition wins over Minot State at The Co-operators Centre. The Cougars won 3-1 on Saturday night, then followed that up with a 4-1 victory over the Beavers on Sunday.
Jaycee Magwood had a big offensive weekend for Regina, figuring in on four of the team's seven goals in the two games.
SATURDAY RECAP
Minot State opened the scoring four minutes into the game, but Magwood replied just over four minutes later and then gave the Cougars the lead for good early in the second period.
Tamara McVannel added to the lead with just a second to go before the second intermission, giving the home team a 3-1 advantage heading into the third.
Jane Kish played the first two periods between the pipes for the Cougars and made six saves, while
Morgan Baker came in and stopped both shots she faced in the third.
SUNDAY RECAP
Merissa Zerr,
Jenna Merk, and
Paige Hubbard all scored in the span of three and a half minutes in the first period to give the Cougars all the offence they'd need in the 4-1 win. MSU got on the board early in the third period, but Magwood connected on the power play for her third goal of the weekend to restore the U of R's three-goal cushion.
Baker again stopped both shots she saw in 20 minutes of playing time.
Alexandria Rajsigl played the final two periods and stopped six of MSU's seven shots against her.
NEXT UP
