Katalin Tolnai, Danielle Steer, and Sophie Damian all scored second-half goals for the No. 8-ranked UBC Thunderbirds as they took a 3-0 win over the Regina Cougars on Friday night at Thunderbird Stadium.
Tolnai opened the scoring with a goal off a free kick from 20 yards out in the 56th minute, but just a few minutes later she absorbed a hard, clean tackle from Regina's
Brooke Schlossarek. Tolnai stayed down and was attended to for the next 30 minutes, and when play finally resumed UBC struck within seconds.
On the ensuing throw-in, the Cougars were whistled for a foul inside the box and UBC was awarded a penalty kick. Danielle Steer made no mistake and put UBC up 2-0, and 15 minutes later the Thunderbirds scored their third goal when Sophie Damian corralled a rebound in front of the Regina net and knocked it home.
The U of R's best chance was probably in the 43rd minute when
Taylor Bubnick stepped into a free kick from about 30 yards out. Bubnick tested UBC keeper Emily Moore with a shot targeted for the top corner, but Moore was able to get her hand on it to direct the ball over the bar.
Moore ended up making three saves to secure the shutout for UBC, which improves to 3-0-2 with the victory.
The Cougars (1-3-1) will continue their West Coast swing on Saturday evening (5:00 PT) with a match against Victoria. The Vikes are 3-1-1 on the season and are coming off a scoreless draw against Saskatchewan.
