Matt Alfaro had two goals for the second-straight game as the Calgary Dinos skated to a 5-1 win and weekend sweep of the University of Regina men's hockey team at The Co-operators Centre on Saturday afternoon.
Alfaro also had an assist, while James Shearer, Luke Harrison, and Kaden Elder found the net for the visiting Dinos.
Tate Coughlin replied for the Cougars, as Regina drops to 0-2-0.
Brodan Salmond earned the win in goal for Calgary, making 16 saves for his first win at the U SPORTS level.
Curtis Meger made his first start for the Cougars, stopping 35 shots.
Shearer scored the lone goal of the period 14:06 into Saturday's game, putting away his second of the weekend after a brilliant effort from Alfaro to split the Cougar defence. The Dinos outshot Regina 12-4 in the opening frame.
Coughlin drew the Cougars even just 26 seconds into the second period, roofing a rebound after Salmond made a pad save on a point shot from
Isaac Schacher.
Calgary went back on top shortly after, as Harrison hammered home a one-timer following a Cougar turnover in their own zone. Alfaro scored his third of the weekend at the 8:02 mark of the second period, deflecting a nice feed from Coda Gordon in the slot for a powerplay marker.
Elder scored the first goal of the third period, which came after Meger got the best of Elder just seconds prior. The first-year Saskatoon product got his revenge on Meger after the first blocker save, wheeling into the slot and putting a wrist shot just inside the post.
Alfaro struck again on the powerplay late in the third, deflecting a point shot from Ryan Gagnon over the shoulder of Meger. Alfaro's three-point performance came after notching two goals and two helpers on Friday.
Both teams will have next weekend off for the Canada West bye week. The Cougars will return to action with a road series at Lethbridge on Oct. 11 and 12. Calgary will host UBC for its home opener that same weekend.
