The University of Regina's men's hockey team suffered a 6-1 loss to Mount Royal on Saturday at the Flames Community Arena in Calgary.
Brennan Riddle scored the lone Regina goal just 39 seconds into the second period.
Bryce Platt made a nice move to fend off an MRU player behind the net and fed it to Riddle, who one-timed home his second goal of the season.
That cut MRU's lead to 2-1, but Mount Royal restored the two-goal lead just 39 seconds later. MRU scored again with three minutes to go in the middle frame to make it 4-1, and Mount Royal (13-5-2) added two more in the third to put it away.
Brandon Holtby made his 10th consecutive start for the Cougars and made 45 saves as Mount Royal held a prononuced edge in shots for the second straight game.
The Cougars, who had opened up the 2020 calendar year with nine out of a possible 10 points heading into Saturday's game, fall to 6-10-3 on the season. They're now two points behind UBC for the sixth and final postseason spot, as the Thunderbirds took two wins off Manitoba this weekend.
Regina returns to the ice next weekend with two critical road games at Manitoba as the Cougars continue to battle for playoff position. The Bisons (9-9-2) will enter Friday's game in fifth place in the Canada West standings with 20 points, three up on sixth-place UBC and five up on Regina.
